Fontwell's numbers defy the credit crunch

BOSSES at Fontwell are celebrating their second highest total for advance ticket sales.
Tickets for last Saturday's Irish race day went fast, and only bad weather on the day stopped the track welcoming a crowd of 5,000.
They still managed more than 4,000, which they were happy with considering the weekend's rain and the current economic climate.
On the track, Findon trainer Nick Gifford continued his good run of Fontwell form in 2008 by sending to post the winner of the feature race.
Soleil Fix, the 11/4 joint favourite, did the business for Gifford in the Morrison Utility Services Supporting WaterAid Handicap Chase.
WaterAid, who help people escape poverty and disease caused by lack of water and sanitation, were the charity which benefitted from the whole meeting, and they were delighted to land around £100,000 – the biggest sum raised at one of Fontwell's charity days.
The final race was held up when trainer Carroll Gray suffered a broken leg on the course when he was kicked by his horse, Madame Helga, as he led her to the start.
Former champion jockey Richard Dunwoody, TV's Simon Fanshawe and former Arsenal goalie Pat Jennings were there to help raise money. Irish band The Saw Doctors rounded off the day with a gig.
Fontwell's next meeting is on Sunday, October 19.
