I never understand pre-season friendlies in terms of quality.
Full-time players who earn thousands of pounds per week struggling to get a result over non-league opposition!
I know it's not about results and all that matters is fitness, but are you telling me a full first-team squad from the Premier Leagu
e still shouldn't be capable of putting together a performance - no matter how many substitutions - to beat non-league opposition?
I have seen some strange results this week. Cambridge United beating Everton 4-2!
I remember Milan Mandaric's first game in charge of Pompey as chairman. He travelled down to Dorchester to watch a full-strength side get beat 3-0!
I wonder what he must have thought. I am sure I recall him saying he was going to stop their wages!
I know players have eight weeks off but surely they can still perform and gel in a changeable side for a friendly?
I know this could be classed as a little bit 'sad' but I did something rather different the other week.
I don't get many Saturdays off but when I do it usually involves meeting a mate in the morning for a fry-up along the seafront, followed by a few bets in front of Sky Sports or a spot of golf.
However, the other week we polished off our Olympic breakfasts and were a little bored... until we noticed the local bowling green.
At this point I must make it clear we were sober.
Now, a sport like this is usually associated with the older generation on our local greens - and not a couple of 32 year olds!
But I have to say it was a brilliant sport. The skill involved, along with our competitive edge and the pressure of being watched, made it a great game.
I can't remember the score properly, but I think I was losing something like 27-18 and came back to win 28-27! It was something like that - but what I do know is I am unbeaten at a sport!
It was fun, competitive and a good laugh so get yourself down to your nearest green!
