It was a memorable celebration of the sporting talent the Chichester district possesses.
More than 500 people packed into the Westgate Leisure Centre for the youth sport achievement awards ceremony.

Organised by Chichester District Council with the Observer and Chichester Priory Rotary Club, the awards recognise sporting excellence among young people, and the commitment made to sport by coaches, volunteers and supporters.

Big winner of the night was water polo ace Scott Martin – featured on the back page – who won the Dennis Polhill award for youth sport achievement.

He was one of 12 youngsters to pick up a gold award for having represented their country at their chosen sport.

But it was not just about him – it was about every one of the hundreds of young sportsmen and women, coaches and volunteers nominated. A record 330 nominations were received.

Bernard Stoneham, of Chi-chester Priory Rotary Club, awarded the first prize of the night – team of the year to Bosham Primary School's tag rugby side, who were county and regional champions.

Volunteer of the year was Keith Toop, manager of Whyke United under-ten B footballers.

Coach of the year was Ray Peck, long-standing head coach of Chichester Olympic Gymnas-tic Club.

The young person's commitment to sport award went to Charlotte O'Leary of the Dragonflyers Trampolining Club. She has coached two junior teams to major successes.

The outstanding sports performance award was won by George Hendrie, British fencing champion for his age group.

Outstanding contributions to sport award went to John Baker of Singleton Cricket Club and Joe Boyce of Whyke United FC in recognition of their contribution to sport in the community.

Cllr John Ridd, chairman of Chichester District Council, and Cllr Nick Thomas, portfolio holder for culture and sport, handed out hundreds of bronze, silver and gold certificates.

The evening also featured a pool party and a demonstration by the Westgate Leisure Centre junior badminton club.

Cllr Ridd said: "This shows the wonderful depth and quality of sport we have."
