With the pitch in prime condition and optimism in the air, Chichester
enjoyed a fairly easy 30-7 home win against Tunbridge Wells, fighting to avoid relegation.

But they made harder work of it than necessary and it was not until the second half that they made certain.

They scored five good tries, a conversion and a penalty to one converted try.

The troops were determined to continue their reliable home form and stay fifth.

They began with their unselfish ritual of dropping their opponents' kick-off and allowed TWs the luxury of an ambitious drop goal which skimmed wide.

Ben Polhill knocked back the visitors' main lineout jumper Binham with a tackle.

Chichester went ahead after four minutes. Hooker Rob Lawrence ran powerfully and a pass to Richard Adams which went on to Tom Polhill gave brother Ben the chance to pick up brilliantly and cross the line.

Adams missed the conversion and was to have bad luck with his place kicking all afternoon.

It was time for the backs to play some champagne rugby: there was lots of fizz but no sweet taste on the end of it.

Right winger Sevi was twice forced into touch because the passing was lateral. TWs went offside to relieve pressure and Adams made it 8-0.

They received a yellow card for persistent infringement which gave the Blues a kick into the corner followed by clean lineout ball and drive over for Lawrence to touch down with confidence.

TWs were awarded a penalty but were unable to find their tee and a hasty drop-kick failed.

There was an exciting breakout by TWs full-back Warren but he was stopped by last man Ross Fairbairn with a classic tackle.

Chichester's promising left winger Kristian Jayne had a decent run before his capture deep in opponents' territory. It was 13-0 at the break.

The Chichester scrum was solid and the lineout was dominated by Nick Blount and Scott Barlow. But TWs had ability in the counter-attack and their backs looked sharp if they could get more possession.

Sevi surged through several tackles. The pack drove on and Barlow was over the line but held up. Kasujja and Tom Polhill were going over the gain line and scrum half Jon Reid was giving competent service.

Following a Ben Polhill tackle, Sevi intercepted on halfway and sprinted to the posts. Adams added the extras.

Chichester relaxed and their opponents decided to run the ball at every opportunity.

A Blue was sin-binned and an unwise pass led to an interception and a quick pass put Turagaiviu away to score behind the posts.

In reply, a five-metre scrum was controlled for Lawrence to clinch his second try. Fresh legs came on with three subs.

A Chichester man had to take an enforced rest following a high tackle before the Blues drove to their favourite corner where Blount launched his long frame over the line.

Director of rugby Paul Colley said: "We played an expansive game but some errors allowed them to stay in the match. But it was a deserved win and good for team morale."

Chichester go to in-form Sidcup this week.

CHICHESTER: Shopland, Lawrence, Veltom, Barlow, Blount, Johnson, B Polhill, O'Hagan, Reid, Adams, Jayne, Kasujja, T Polhill, Seviua, Fairbairn, Davies, Pugh, Upton.
