North Mundham's Leo Forster has become British rallycross champion after winning nine out of 15 races and driving 13 fastest laps in his RX150.

The eight-month season saw competitors race on circuits specially designed for spectator and driver excitement, racing on Tarmac and dirt at speeds in excess of 115mph all in one lap.

Venues all over Britain were used as Forster won the title with more than 260 points – 60-plus clear of his nearest rival.

He led the championship in his Yellow RX150 from start to finish, with three wins from three, this in his first season.

A few spins in mid-season saw him lose the lead to Andy Scott but he regained it with five wins on the trot.

"When you first race these things you can't believe how twitchy they are at the back," said Forster.

Forster needed all his experience to beat off rivals including appearances by Chris Meeke (world rally champion) and Mark Higgins (three-time British rally champion).

Many of the races were shown on Motors TV.

Forster has been racing since he was about ten, when he first competed in karts and went on be become Formula 6 British champion in 1994.

He joined Formula Ford and became vice-champion in 2000.

He was without a drive from 2001 to 2008 but kept his foot in the door by working throughout his degree in sports science, and after, as a race car and rally car instructor.

Now he is about to open a rallycross school.

RX150s are space frames with bodywork and a motorbike engine.

The engine produces 150 bhp from a Honda fireblade engine and the car weighs 430kg, which gives it a BHP/tonne of more than 300 – more than some Ferraris.

It has a 0-60 time of 3.5 seconds and a top speed of more than 120mph.
RX150s are the same machines used at the Race of Champions, where the likes of Michael Schumacher and Jenson Button compete.

The two-seater with which Forster is starting his tuition school has an even more powerful engine and produces 180bhp.

He said: "This compensates for the extra weight of two people. These things love to go sideways – and 70mph sideways is so much more fun than 100mph in a straight line!"
