Chichester Bowmen hosted their first Sussex Archery Association Albion League match of the summer season.

It was against Plumpton who, like Chichester, fielded a large team.

An Albion round is three dozen arrows at 80 yards, three dozen at 60 yards and three dozen at 50.

The rain held off leaving just a blustery wind to contend with. It was a close-fought match with archers from both sides putting up some good scores.

After adding up the scores from the four top archers from each club and making adjustments to allow for the compound archers, Plumpton beat Chichester by just eight points.

Scores: Chichester Bowmen 3,262 – Gary Footman (compound), Paul Newhouse (recurve), Eric Pember (recurve), Paul Johnson (recurve); Plumpton 3,270 – Alan Mitchell (compound), Peter Mitchell (compound), Steve Adams (recurve), Elaine Mitchell (compound).

The Bowmen also took part in the British Archery Portsmouth League for indoor shooting in the winter.

This is open to all archery clubs in the country and a Portsmouth round is shot with scores being submitted to the league. Results have just been published.

Chichester Bowmen were pleased to find they were top of their division by 100 points for compound bow, with Gary Footman named as gentleman archer of the month for February and March.

They were also top of their division for recurve bow, with Gill Wood named top lady archer for February and March.
