The West Sussex League have won the Sussex Inter-League tournament – despite this being their first appearance in it for more than ten years.

They've done it with a game to spare, maintaining their 100 per cent record by beating the Worthing & District League 2-0 at Woodside Road.

The Worthing League gave West Sussex their toughest game and it was 80 minutes before man-of-the-match James Wrigley made the breakthrough with a header from a Dave Speller cross.

The energetic Joss Parsons sealed victory from close range after 85 minutes.

Speller hit the the post midway through the second half and livewire striker Tim Martin skimmed the bar after a run down the left.

The back three of Mark Livermore, Marcus Cogger and Mike McCaffrey, who have all played every minute of the three games so far, were outstanding and recalled keeper James Fisher produced a perfect display between the sticks, making a crucial save with his legs as Worthing poured forward in the dying minutes.

After a quiet first-half where he was crowded out, the tricky Jamie Buitenhuis was switched to the left after the break and he looked far happier in the extra space.

Glenn Souter made his first start and showed his class with some raking crossfield passes early in the second half.

Skipper Mark Cooper had an excellent first half but was withdrawn soon after the break because of illness. His replacement Danny Miller took over where he left off.

Mark Pedrick came on after 70 minutes and made an immediate impact with some classy touches, good movement and clever passes.

Lee Thompson got in on the act, coming on in the final few minutes for his debut.

Manager Adie Konieczny said: "The whole squad have been fantastic, and I wish I could manage this same group of lads every week.

"My assistant James Baker and I have worked hard on getting this show on the road and the support we've had from players, managers, and the league committee has been brilliant."

WSFL: Fisher, Livermore, Cogger, McCaffrey, Cooper, Souter, Parsons, Speller, Buitenhuis, Wrigley, Martin. Subs: Miller, Pedrick, Thompson.
