Anthem is outdated
SO BOGNOR MP Nick Gibb laments the fact that schoolkids don’t appear to know the words to the national anthem.
Welcome to new bishop
The clergy and laity of the diocese of Chichester will wish to join the Rt Rev Mark Sowerby in welcoming our new bishop, Dr Martin Warner.
Choice of bishop ‘cruel blow to women’
THE forthcoming ordination of Dr Martin Warner as Bishop of Chichester is unpalatable for the majority of worshipping Anglicans.
Dangerous ruts and potholes need to be fixed
My wife and I would like to thank the four very kind people, or was it five, who so kindly came to our assistance in Chichester on Thursday, May 3, when her wheelchair hit a rut in the centre of the street, as we crossed Newtown/East Pallant, throwing her on to the road.
Rough with smooth
YOUR headline regarding road resurfacing looks impressive, but the actuality is rather different.
A27 now notorious
IS IT any wonder a recent report published in this paper highlighted the unusually high loss of businesses from the Chichester area?
Survey seems scant
I LIVE in Southbourne, and have been asking friends and neighbours whether they received the information sent out by the trust on the ‘learning village’. So far only two people have advised that they did get a copy; this means the other 15 or so did not. I am curious as to how the mailing list was chosen.
2 commentsPlease think pink
LAST YEAR my son and I had our photo taken with Andrea McLean from the programme Loose Women, she was helping to promote the Pink Ribbon Walk which has been held annually for some years.
A blooming big mistake by council?
HAVING a copy of Midhurst Matters arrive, I was drawn to the entry form for Midhurst in Bloom.
‘Village’ not answer
I READ your front page article (April 26) about the proposed ‘learning village’ with great interest.
1 commentDefence of disabled
I FEEL I have to put the case for disabled people who are ignored when through no fault of their own have to use these buggies to get out for shopping, visiting friends etc.
1 commentVerges ‘destroyed’
OVER the past five to ten years the general appearance and ambience in Little Breach have obviously deteriorated.
Expansion will make ‘dire’ parking situation worse
I AM sure I’m not alone among local residents in being unable to share the excitement of Julie Sleeman regarding the further expansion of Chichester College.
College has vital role
ON PAGE 4 of the Observer (April 26) you report the news the delayed development at Chichester College is to go ahead.
Realistic view on traffic is essential
THE letter from Mike White of the Chichester Residents’ Associations Co-ordinating Group (Observer, April 26) calling for the district and county councils to take a more realistic view of the traffic problems caused by large developments is most apposite.
Fail to see how
I refer to your headlines regarding the proposed Southbourne learning village. I fail to see how objections by just 45 people out of 8,000 can be described as a ‘backlash’. To look at it another way this means that an overwhelming 7,955 people (99.43 per cent) are either in favour or, at the very least, do not object.
2 commentsStrength of objections
As one of the elected district councillors for Southbourne, I have been a consistent opponent of the proposed learning village and am delighted the Bourne Trust are at last recognising the strength of local objections, although curiously the distribution of the questionnaires within Southbourne appears to have been rather selective, not reaching those who had expressed any opposition.
1 commentFred’s ticket to ride
WITH reference to Fred Ellis on his cycle in the precinct in today’s Observer. I hope he didn’t get a penalty ticket as I believe cycling is not allowed in the precinct!
Camera is a danger
I WAS astounded to see how Sussex Police were creating danger to motorists on the A27 today. On a wet morning, Sussex Police had set up a hidden speed camera on the A27 between Fontwell and Tangmere, just before the turning for Norton.
1 commentJunior school were against new scheme
I ATTENDED the meeting in Southbourne Village Hall, regarding the learning village at the Bourne Campus. The article in last week’s paper was fair and balanced and did indicate the strong feeling against the proposal.
1 commentCost of free parking
I HAVE listened and read the reasons and arguments for imposing Sunday parking charges in Chichester. It will raise money. Chichester District Council estimates it will receive £180,000 gross but after the cost of enforcement, the result will be in the region of £158,000 per annum by imposing Sunday parking.
1 commentComments welcome
WE WELCOME the comments from CRACG and Mr Cairns in regards to the parking situation at Graylingwell Park.
Congratulations for a job well done
I WOULD like to take this opportunity to comment on the paviour repair work in the Chichester pedestrian precincts.
4 commentsPlea to alter parking
THE LETTER from Peter Cairns of Graylingwell Park comes as no surprise to the Chichester Residents’ Associations who have seen the smug indifference of both West Sussex County Council and Chichester District Council to the ludicrous claims of developers.
1 commentWhy are dentists so inaccessible?
FOR SOME reason many dental surgeries are in first-floor premises.
1 commentProfit from A-boards
AS I THREADED my way through the city centre on Saturday, squeezing past the A-boards and myriad of chairs and tables that suddenly flourish and spread across the pedestrian areas at the first sign of spring, it occurred to me that the city could profit from 212 (allegedly) A-boards that blight our streets.
1 commentThank you for kindness
I WOULD like to thank all the kind people who came to my aid about eight weeks ago at the back of M&S car park when I caught my rollator in a drain and fell over.
Town reaps benefit
ON BEHALF of Midhurst Town Council I would like to thank everyone who turned out to help with our annual spring clean day last Sunday, April 22.
Hope for vote
As a former Lib Dem, who resigned from the party after the university fees about-face by the Lib Dems, I was wondering who I was going to vote for next time.
1 commentFor once I agree with Barkes
Having just read Duncan Barkes’ column in today’s Observer I want to say how much, for once, I agree with what he says.
Values over caning
BARKES at Large is, of course, right that no civilised society can envisage a return to the cane in our schools and teachers deserve our sympathy as they struggle to maintain discipline in the classroom and search for a viable alternative.
It is votes that count in the end
Congratulations on winning the intellectual argument with your ‘Don’t cut us out campaign’.
2 commentsWe need more caring in our society
I read the excellent article by your chief reporter Jenny Mouland while buying the Midhurst and Petworth Observer at our local village shop.
1 commentDo councillors care?
I WAS terribly shocked to read the front page of the Midhurst and Petworth Observer this week.
1 commentGood news in store
WHAT a negative headline on the front of the Chichester Observer in connection with the arrival in town of the John Lewis home store, compared with the West Sussex Gazette’s front page which was really positive and up-beat.
1 commentLocals should have supported shop
THE STORY on your front page about the closure of a Costcutter store by the opening of a Co-op store is quite frankly shocking!
All the best for play
ON THURSDAY, April 12, I went to see The Midhurst Players opening night production of Much Ado About Shakespeare (a light-hearted revue of all things Shakespearean) compiled by Julie Tickner of Midhurst Players.
Thanks for drive home
MAY I take the opportunity, belatedly to thank the elderly couple who drove me home with all my heavy shopping from Aldwick beach huts cafe to Leonora Drive, Nyetimber, after I had been refused to board the 11am 60 bus from Bognor (1 per hour) on April 1 (all Fools Day) – I had perhaps foolishly purchased some beansticks without thinking.
