It is Lesley Garrett's warmth and personality which makes her a diva above all others.
With recent memories at Chichester of another top diva who did not speak to her audience, it made such a difference to have Britain's top soprano make us feel that she appreciated and enjoyed singing to us. Her informal style and relaxed explanations made this a concert to remember for the right reasons.
She did not take the festivities and its organisers for granted. When she personally thanked Amanda Sharp (Festivities Director) she spoke for thousands of us who year after year enjoy and value the events.
In a very varied programme of songs and arias from operas and musicals Lesley Garrett ensured that music to suit all tastes was included.
Particularly beautiful was Frank Bridge's setting to the poem when you are old and grey. Her trio of songs from the Sound of music.
Singing with her was Geoffrey Dolton (baritone) and their duets which included Mozart's Papagena from the Magic Flute and Richard Rogers' Some enchanted evening were magnificent.
Andrew West achieved total empathy with his brilliant piano accompaniment.
