THREE weekends of traffic mayhem in Arundel has come to a close.
The Highways Agency has confirmed that works on the A27 railway bridge, which have left it closed to traffic, were completed today (October, 13).
Roger Jones, a spokesman for the agency said: "This means that we do not need to close the bridge over the two contingency weekends that have been published."
Five weekends had been scheduled for closure, and these included this coming weekend (October 17 to 20), and from October 31 to November 3.
As it is, the bridge has been closed on weekends commencing September 12, September 26 and last weekend.
Mr Jones said: "We thank the users of the bridge for their patience whilst we carried out the work."
He added that while the refurbishment would continue underneath the bridge, the remaining work was not expected to affect traffic on the bridge itself.
The closure, which saw motorists diverted away from Arundel at the Crossbush junction, and through Littlehampton and onto Bognor before rejoining the A27, had caused uproar among traders in the town, whose takings were hit hard.
Resurfacing, waterproofing and brick repairs were carried out.
