MONEY awarded to Littlehampton-based Arun Counselling Centre will fund a new service offering an additional form of therapy.

The centre has been given £5,000 by the Sussex Community Foundation to provide cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) sessions to anyone assessed by a counsellor as being likely to benefit.

CBT is a short-term therapy, over about six to eight sessions, introduced in the United States in the 1960s and now recognised globally as being highly effective in treating anxiety, depression, panic, phobias and other similar mental disorders.

Unlike older therapies, it focuses on the "here and now" instead of exploring conditions in the client's past. There is more about the process on the Centre's website www.aruncounselling.org.uk

The centre has a team of counsellors qualified and trained to use CBT, and appointments can be made by telephoning 01903 714417 or e-mailing aruncounselling@btinternet.com

Clients are asked to offer the service what they can afford. Those able to offer the full fee may be given quick access.

Anna Barnard, the centre's director, said: "Counselling from our service is open to any member of the community, regardless of their ability to offer a donation."
