One down - four to go. Welcome to the second day of Glorious Goodwood.
The forecast is for brighter conditions for Sussex Stakes day and there is so much to look forward to.
This is again the place to stay for all the updates throughout the day, on everything from what the weather is doing to do, to whether any of ou
r collection of experts and chancers are tipping the winners.
On day one, The News' Rob Atkins tipped one winner as did Fitzdares bookmakers. I didn't manage any though am claiming two seconds and two thirds as enough to make me champion of the each-way betters. The Press Association took our honours with two wins, Zebedee and Start Right. It is, though, a marathon not a sprint, as all good football managers say when bottom of the table in the autumn.
As yesterday, we'll do most recent updates at the top of the story, and - again - we want you to get involved.
E-mail me at steve.bone@chiobserver.co.uk with your tips, favourite Glorious Goodwood memories, your after-racing account of your day if you have been to the festival, or anything else you might think relevant.
6.15. That's it for the day-two blog but to come on the webiste later are further reaction pieces to an absorbing day's racing, plus the first tips for Friday and an early look at Friday's runners and riders. Here are
Thursday's Press Association picks (though the way Atkins has gone today, with five wins from seven) his will be the ones to follow and we'll put them on here in the morning. And
here is the Racing Post website's Thursday card.
6.00. You can judge the success of a day's racing at Glorious by asking Rod Fabricius and Seamus Buckley how they are faring. "Good racing, good weather, no complaints," says Rod. Seamus adds: "Everyone's happy with the ground. We might do a bit of watering tonight and then we will review it again tomorrow." There's no rain forecast til Friday night at the earliest.
5.50. It's over for another day and George Baker, who had a couple of excellent wins at Goodwood earlier in the season, is the last man to taste victory on day two. He guides home Rulesn'regulations at 9/1 for Matthew Salaman of Lambourne. Richard Hughes leaves it a little too late this time and Oratory has to settle for second - so just the two wins for him and the other Richard today, average by their very high standards.
5.25. Here's
the full story on the big race of the day - Canford Cliffs' thrilling win in the Group One Sussex Stakes. Suddenly, only one more race to go. Or 22 for the whole festival, which sounds more comforting.
5.16. It's 2-2 between Moore and Hughes on the day now as the champion jockey takes another photo finish on Dance East, 7/4 favourite, getting the nod from Tom Queally on Seradim. We've certainly seen some good racing today - and all our tipsters, me included, are now finding winners, albeit short-priced ones. Well, you can only tip what's in front of you.
4.40. The country's current leading flat jockey, Paul Hanaghan, rarely seen in these parts, lands the Markel International Maiden Fillies' Stakes on Motitia, in another photo finish, from Richard Hills on Qenaa.
4.34. Tomorrow is Ladies' Day but today there are some 'interesting' male fashions around. I've seen an all-mauve suit and an all-sky blue suit. Might invest in something like that myself for tomorrow.
4.33. In our little tipping game it's Atkins 5, PA 4, Fitzdares 2, Bone 1 over the two days so far. All to play, but probably not for me.
4.25. In case you missed it earlier,
here are some pictures from day one. We will have the best of the day two action in pictures here tomorrow.
4.14. It would appear our friend Mr Atkins from The News has backed four out of four winners so far this afternoon, almost overshadowing (but not quite) my own achievement of backing one, my first of the week in the shape of the easiest winning pick there has been, Canford Cliffs. An update on our tipping table follows later.
4.06. Ryan Moore takes the Racing UK Handicap Stakes on Verdant - but only just. It's a photo finish from Jimmy Fortune on Mataaleb. Moore won't let Hughes run away with the top jockey title just yet...
4pm. Hannon on Canford Cliffs: "He's the best horse I've ever trained. I don't think the track suited him. If he comes home right I'd be very happy. He's got a turn of foot, this horse, and you need to switch him off. He was a bit too free early in the season but he's doing everything right now."
3.50. I'm back from my adventure. What a race. What a race. It was billed as having the potential to be a classic contest - and it was. Rip Van Winkle, last year's winner, looked for all the world like having the beating of odds-on favourite Canford Cliffs only for Hannon's runner to snatch it at the last moment. Thrilling stuff and it sent the crowd wild, even if none of them would have won too many pounds on it. In the winner's enclosure, Richard Hughes punches the air with delight as the crowd give him a rapturous welcome. Hannon's interview with the media's racing experts - and me - is interrupted by RVW's trainer Aidan O'Brien offering Hannon his congrats. Lovely to see.
3pm Sussex Stakes next, and a cool £141,032 on its way to the winner. Been watching so far from the press room in the stand - a good view but time now, I feel, to get down to the finishing post and get as close to this one as it is possible to get. I may be some time...
2.52. It's a procession, this one. By that I mean this race, and quite possibly the fight to be Glorious's best jockey and trainer. Hannon and Hughes do it again with King Torus, second favourite, which leaves Stentorian and the favourite Crown Prosecutor trailing, winning by six lengths. Just as happy is another whose name begins with R - Mr Rob Atkins, whose early day-two double has put him in front in the race to be this website's top tipster.
2.17pm. Sorry for the delay with no updates. Had a few sports pages to finish - plenty of Glorious coverage on them, of course. Then a mad dash here ... and into the car park without any verbal battles with stewards. Here just in time to see them go off for the first, the Goodwood Stakes, which is won by Eddie Ahern on 6/1 favourite Ghimaar. Seb Sanders on Junior is not far behind. Ahern said: "This fellow had some nice runs with Mr (Dermot) Weld and then things didn't work out at Ascot. Then he went jumping (at Worcester) and did that really well and he won his race there easy. I was afraid he'd get stopped in his run, but he was travelling so well I thought I'd see if it worked." Full result at bottom of story. Bigger crowd than yesterday, by the looks of things.
1pmThey all want to join in now. My Cowdray Park seniors golf correspondent Tony Castley says he had a 12/1 winner and 33/1 third on day one so does that make him an expert? Yes, I'd say. Today he backs: 2.10 Markington, 2.45 Crown Prosecutor, 3.25 Premio Loco (ew), 5.10 Dance East.
12.15. Latest from Seamus Buckley for day two: "It's still good on the straight course and good to firm, good in places on the round course. We applied six millimetres of irriigation to first two furlongs of the mile course. It's a nice bright clear day and is set remain that way. We will review the situation as to tomorrow after racing. The ground might just ride a tad quicker but there were no complaints about the ground yesterday (Tuesday] so we'll let sleeping dogs lie."
12.10pm.
Picture gallery from yesterday now available to look at - hope to add to it later.
11.30am. Celeb spotting is always a good pastime at Glorious. Day one's top points were awarded for Liz Hurley, Shane Warne and Lawrence Dallaglio. Can you do better? Email me at once if you can. Picture gallery from yesterday being worked on as I write.
11.10am. Time to take the plunge. My picks for the day: 2.10 Lady Eclair, 2.45 Crown Prosecutor, 3.25 Canford Cliffs (but I would put e/w money on Premio Loco), 4.00 Sea of Heartbreak, 4.35 Sharnberry, 5.10 Dance East, 5.45 Thebes. Can't help thinking the name of my 4.00 horse will sum up my day...
10.30. Here are
Fitzdares selections for today - they got one win yesterday but must be hoping for a little better today. Mine follow soon, but can't find my pin...
9.40am. Just spoken to the main men at the course, Messrs Fabricius and Buckley. The former reports a crowd of about 12,500 for day one - about the same as last year - and that figure will rise as the week goes on. Says conditions were ideal for racing yesterday and reckons it'll be brighter and fresher from today. Also thinks punters should be doing ok so far with three favourites or joint favourites winning on Tuesday. Seamus says a bit of watering of the first two furlongs of the mile course was done last night, and tells me jockeys were in praise of the surface. More reaction from both as the week goes on, and in the Observer, out on Thursday morning.
9.20am. Once again you can pay on the day again today, so don't be put off if you've not yet got a ticket. For Gordon and Lennox enclosure admission it's £33 and £15 respectively. If you can't get along, the first four races are on Channel 4. Best watched with this blog accompanying it if you ask me.
9am. More tips for today. Scores after yesterday are Press Assoc 2 winners, Rob Atkins of The News 1, local bookies Fitzdares 1, me zero. Here's Rob's efforts for today: 2.10 Ghimaar, 2.45 King Torus, 3.25 Canford Cliffs, 4.00 Verdant, 4.35 Yashila, 5.10 Dance East, 5.45 Oratory.
8.35. Was so inundated with info to pass on yesterday I completely forgot to pass on a few tips I picked up last week from ex-jockey Colin Brown, who rode Desert Orchid to 17 victories. He'd tipped Zebedee in the Molecomb Stakes yesterday, too. Today, in the Vintage Stakes he goes for King Torus to edge out Crown Prosecutor, while in the Sussex Stakes he's backing Canford Cliffs. Who isn't? More tips from all sorts of people follow later in the morning.
8am. The sun is shining in Chichester, there are few clouds in the sky and the Sussex Stakes is a little over seven hours away. What more do you need?
A couple of other yarns to occupy you if I go more than ten minutes without an update (well it is press day at the Observer so I have some other stuff to do this morning).
Here's our
profile of Richard Hannon who we (rightly it seems after a first-day double) singled out for special attention in our Glorious magazine and
here's how we recounted the dramas of day one.
Here's
