A FIRE crew commander today hailed the exceptional bravery and skill of his firefighters at the scene of a devastating Horsham blaze on Friday night.

The Horsham heroes braved a dramatic backdraught explosion to tackle a raging inferno at the former Northbrook College site after they were called at 11.15pm.

Crew commander Tim Wheeler said he felt he had the best crew in the world after his team fought the fire from an aerial platform and from the ground to bring it under control before houses and businesses nearby were affected.

"I am very proud of them," he said.

"They showed they are individually strong and that they work very well as a team."
