Southern Railway said the 11.11am Southampton to Horsham train was in collision with the man and the dog.

The Arun Valley line between Bognor and Horsham was closed while police carried out their investigation.

A bus service replaced the Bognor to Horsham service and trains from London were terminated at Horsham.

Southern Railway spokesman Chris Hudson confirmed the line opened at 4.15pm with services running both ways.

He added: "We do have quite a few drivers and trains out of position.
"There will still be delays."

Next of kin have not been informed.

Police are not treating the death as suspicious.
