Conservatives win by-election

THE Conservatives held the Hurstpierpoint and Downs seat in last night's by-election with a resounding win to retain their stronghold on Mid Sussex District Council.

Conservative candidate Jack Callaghan takes his place on the 54-seat Tory-controlled council after winning 1,040 votes.

Nearest challenger Liberal Democrat Rodney Jackson polled 608 and Mike Airey of the Green Party received 374.The turnout was 35.9 per cent.

The vote was the last of three by-elections on the district council that leave the political make-up unchanged at 30 Conservatives, 23 Liberal Democrats, and one Labour.
