Development threat to wildlife

OPEN space in an area of Haywards Heath that is rich in butterflies and wild flowers could be concreted over for more housing.
The piece of open land at the back of Badger Drive is at the edge of the Blunts Wood and Paiges Meadows nature reserve where surveys have revealed orchids, rare butterflies, buzzards, sparrow hawks and a nesting barn owl.
Mid Sussex District Council refers to the area being considered for potential housing as 'Paddocklands' and insists it is not part of the nature reserve but Terry Gillard, chairman of the Friends of Blunts Wood and Paiges Meadows, disagrees.
Echoing detailed historical information on the reserve contained in the Friends' brochure, he said for the past 11 years the meadows containing the contested land have been referred to collectively as Paiges Meadows and in 2000 they were given nature conservation status by English Nature.
