Jack Pearce has warned his side to start taking their chances or face a long battle to beat the drop.
The Rocks boss has seen his side perform well in the past couple of matches.
But last Friday’s 2-0 home defeat to Eastbourne summed up the season so far – a good performance but no points.
And now, ahead of two crucial games in a week, Pearce has told his side to start making their own luck.
He said: “I think for us the league table should say played seven, won four, drawn one and lost two.
“If we hadn’t made schoolboy errors that’s what it would look like.
“Silly mistakes have cost us and we’re not taking our chances when we get them.
“You do get periods in football when you don’t get the rub of the green but you don’t get that week in, week out.
“Once again I was generally pleased with the performance last week, but unfortunately we’re in the results business.
“The second half was one-way traffic and we created three wonderful chances, missed the lot and then they went up the other end of the pitch and scored in the last minute.”
The boss has been pleased with the contribution of Chris Breach and Dan Beck in recent weeks, but said the most important thing was getting the team to play well together on a consistent basis.
Beck has contributed five of Bognor’s eight goals this season, while Breach looked back to his best against second-placed Eastbourne.
Pearce said: “Breach has done very well and so has Dan Beck, but it’s not an ‘I’ game it’s a ‘we’ game and it’s up to us to get the team together and keep on going.”
Pearce admitted his search for new players was continuing, with the main aim of bringing some physical strength into the side.
“I’m always looking to bring players in,” he said. “Unfortunately footballers aren’t like tins of beans, you can’t just pick one up that easily.
“Hopefully we can bring some in over the next few weeks. We do need a bit of physical presence.”
Bognor travel to Weston-super-mare on Saturday, before a home game with Bath on Tuesday, and Pearce is looking forward to returning to a happy hunting ground.
He said: “Looking at the weekend, obviously we hope our good away form continues at Weston-super-Mare. They have improved again this year but we have a good record down there.
“And then against Bath we have to try to get our first home win of the season.”
The Rocks, who lie 17th in Blue Square South, have no new injuries worries ahead of the weekend and may recall midfielder Michael Birmingham to the heart of the side.
Weston are a point and two places above Bognor, but go into the match off the back of three successive defeats.
Last week they went down to a late winner at Eastleigh and will be looking to get their season back on track.
