THE Grange Day Centre lost 30 'customers' in the past year and gained only ten new ones, said director of adults' social services Amanda Rogers.
"People are making other choices and it's a trend we see continuing."

She said there were currently 63 people on the register.

Over the next two years, before the closure of the current Grange, Ms Rogers said work would continue to encourage voluntary sector organisations and community groups to offer a more flexible range of community activities.

Consultation

"We will also talk to our customers and carers who use the Grange about what activities they want in the future."

This would enable social services to develop a more 'individualised' range of activities.

This consultation would take place across the county later this year, she said, as the future of day care county-wide was examined.

She said she was unable to give specific examples of what activities would be on offer for older people in Midhurst until they had been consulted.

Commitment

But elsewhere a 78-year-old man had been taken horse riding after consultation and another older customer had been taken to the seaside by a carer.

Richard Perry, director of policy and partnerships, reaffirmed WSCC's 'absolute commitment' to a partnership with Chichester District Council in the redevelopment of the Grange.

"We are still very keen to be part and parcel of it, with the replacement of the library and better space for the registrar together with the merging of the help point unifying the county and the district," he said.

"The big message is there is commitment from WSCC, but at the moment we are not proposing day care in the traditional sense as we have had it up to now."
