A speed indicator display sign designed to deter speeding – and known as SID – is to be re-launched by West Sussex County Council.
SID not only shows drivers how fast they are travelling as they approach it, but also displays either a smiling face for those under the speed limit or a frown if they are breaking the law.
"New grant funding means the county council is now able t
o offer the SID service for the first time since last June," said a council spokesman.
"Applications for a half-day visit by a SID and a supervisor are being invited from residents and local organisations such as parish councils."
A criteria system was used to decide whether the SID visit is free – such as areas close to a school or playground – or was charged at £50 to help off-set the cost of supervising the equipment.
Cllr Clive Roberts, the county cabinet member for roads and transport, said: "Budget pressures have meant we have not been able to offer SIDs for almost a year.
"I am delighted funding is now available because this has proved in the past to be a very popular service.
"The speed of traffic is a major concern for many of our local communities, and past experience has shown a visit from SID has helped have an influence on driver behaviour."
