Fernhurst Cricket Club has invested in a portable practice cricket net, thanks to the generosity of its 14 vice-presidents and Chichester District Council.
Each group paid around half the £1,405 cost of the net, which will be of benefit to players of all ages.

The net can be easily moved to where it is needed and no part of the ground will get worn.

The next purchase planned is a wicket protection
sheet at a cost of £550. The sheet can be spread over the wicket the night before a match if there is any prospect of rain.

The greater part of the money is already in hand, with only £100 to go.
The cricket club is thriving, with a good number of junior players of all ages, but not quite enough of any one age to make up a team for a specific age group.

Five junior cricketers play regularly with the seniors in either the Saturday or Sunday teams.

They are Josh Allen, James Bristow, Ashley Holloway, Harry Lambert and Ryan Lewis. Josh, who is having a particularly fine season, is chasing his father, Mike, in the highest run scoring competition.

The club is affiliated to Sussex Cricket Board and the ECB and plays in the I'Anson League. It also has a full set of friendly fixtures, many of which date back more than 30 years.

Tim Rice, one of the vice-presidents, brings his Heartaches Team annually and other peripatetic teams include the BBC Bushmen, the Rainmen, who are a collection of weather forecasters, the BBC Radio News team, The Laggers, the London Erratics and the Ancient Mariners.

There are also friendlies against local teams such as Lynchmere, Kirdford, Easebourne, Lodsworth, Steep, Graffham, Bury and Tangmere.

For more information about the club, contact John Allen on 01428 653662 or chairman Geoff Holmes on 01428 653205.
