A Midhurst night patrolman won praise this week after saving a man from the River Rother.
It is the second time in a month that 34-year-old Darren Robinson has come to the rescue while performing his duties for Pro Tec Security Management.

Owner of the company Ted Liddle said Pro Tec had been supervising a function at the Cowdray Ruins
last Saturday evening when Mr Robinson was called to help with a male guest.

"He was told that the man had been seen wandering off across the polo field towards the River Rother.

"He went off in the direction of the river, but could see nothing. He persevered with his search and heard muffled sounds of somebody in distress.

"As he got closer he could see a man in the middle of the river up to his neck in water.

"The man appeared confused and dazed. Darren shone his torch at him and spoke with him, encouraging him to get to the riverbank and illuminating the area to guide him."

When the man came close, Mr Robinson grabbed hold of his wrist and pulled him out of the water.

He was then taken to St Richard's Hospital in Chichester for treatment.

Mr Liddle told the Observer: "Without Darren's perseverance, the man in the water would not have survived the night.

"Darren deserves recognition for his prompt, spirited and professional actions."

Last month Mr Robinson foiled the theft of an £18,000 mini digger from a property at Lurgashall.
