A great-grandmother from Petworth has died four months before her 104th birthday.
Maud Thayre had never moved far from the town throughout her long life.
On her 100th birthday in August, 2004, she told the Observer: "Being 100 feels no different. I might be a bit more wonky, but I'm alright!"
Born at Upperton, the daughter of a bricklayer, she worked at a knitting factory at River Common and in 1927 married Frank Thayre, whose family were blacksmiths in Petworth.
The couple and their two sons moved to Petworth in 1950. Widowed in 1969, Mrs Thayre moved to Somerset Hospital, an almshouse set up by the Leconfield Estate. Latterly she was a resident at Courtlea care home.
The funeral took place yesterday (Wednesday, April 23) at Godalming crematorium.
Mrs Thayre is survived by her two sons, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
