A challenge to villagers in Tillington each to raise £200 to help restore their ancient roadside church wall and embankment has had an unexpected spin-off – a giant street party.
The idea came to Westside resident Sheila Davis when she attended a meeting in the village which set up the Tillington Wall Fund.
And on Sunday, Westside and its neighbouring street, The Harrows, became a party venue.
Picnic tables and chairs w
ere set up for people to sit and have a chat, and there were cake, plant and toy stalls, a barbecue, ice creams, face painting, a raffle, tombola, and plastic ducks to be caught on an inflatable pool.
During the afternoon, £1,200 was raised for the wall fund, but Bob Sneller, one of the helpers, said: "Even more important than the money was the community spirit.
"There was a fantastic turn-out and it was a great village event. People came and went during the afternoon. At one time there were at least 100 there."
The party was an opportunity for villagers to meet newcomers and renew acquaintance with other residents they had not seen for some time, he added.
