The Black Down Race notches up its 26th annual running this year.
An unusual feature of the three-mile fun race, which starts from Fernhurst recreation ground at 11am on Sunday, September 7, is the route's 3,00ft ascent to the top of Black Down at the Temple of the Winds, before competitors turn for the descent.
The record for the race is around 19 minutes, although the greater majority of competitors take around half an hour on the very varied ground.
Starting on the mown turf of the recreation ground, the going comprises paths, rocks, leaf mould and hard surfacing, all adding interest to the race.
There are seven cups to be won. The overall winner is presented with the Black Down Cup and a Fernhurst resident, man or woman, can win the Fernhurst Cup.
There are also trophies for the fastest woman competitor and the fastest under-16 and under-12. Cups for the veteran man, over 45, and the veteran woman, over 40, are usually hotly-contested.
Entries for the race, organised by Fernhurst Youth Club, will be taken on the day, before 11am. Cost is £3 for adults and £1.50 for under-16s.
The recreation ground is east of the A286 in the village.
