A NEW entrance to Midhurst Primary School is the only way to resolve safety and congestion problems stressed town councillors this week.
Members of the finance and general purposes committee are angry new traffic restrictions proposed by West Sussex County Council (WSCC) seem concerned with parking instead of safety.
The proposals included double yellow lines on both sides of Also
Ashfield Road (the spur road off Ashfield Road) up to the entrance.
Last month town councillors asked WSCC to amend this to double yellow lines on the south side of the road and single yellows on the north side.
They stressed their preferred option to end the problems would be to create a completely new entrance to the school.
But this week WSCC traffic engineer Heather Bishop told them she was concerned this would reduce the number of on-street parking spaces in the spur road by ten during the day and eight at night.
"This would obviously have a greater effect on local parking."
She said the new entrance to the school would not be going ahead because funding was not available from either WSCC highways or the education department.
Chairman of the town council's finance committee Stephen Morley proposed councillors should reiterate the importance of a new entrance.
"We still feel safety is the main issue and a new entrance has got to be addressed. The primary school is now bigger and has more pupils and there is a family centre on the site."
