Countryside visitors have been praised by police after a significant fall in thefts at beauty spots.
The welcome drop at beauty spot car parks over the last few weeks across the Chichester District, which runs from the Manhood Peninsula to Midhurst and Petworth, comes after police urged motorists not to make life easy for thieves by leaving valuabl
es in full view.

District performance Sergeant Anna Gent said: "It would appear that members of the public have heeded the advice regarding parking at beauty spot locations across Chichester District.

"The number of crimes involving theft from motor vehicles at these locations has significantly reduced during the last few weeks."

But it seems some motorists are not heeding the same security advice when parking elsewhere in the district.

On the last weekend in June, a vehicle was stolen after the driver walked away leaving the keys in the ignition and four others had items stolen after they were left insecure.

Two of the incidents where items were stolen from vehicles happened in Westbourne, one at Stanstead House and the other at Halnaker Barn Farm.

Sgt Gent said: "Police would urge members of the public to ensure their vehicles are left secure at all times.

"Any subsequent insurance claim may be affected if proper security measures have not been put in place or adhered to."

Two men in their early 30s were arrested and questioned in connection with the incidents.
