Bellringers at Stedham are appealing for new members after bidding farewell to three long-standing colleagues.
Recently ringers at St James’ Church gathered together to celebrate the retirement of tower captain Geoff West and ringing master John Maybrey and to say goodbye to Mary Gilbert who is moving to Bristol to be near her family.
The three of them had notched up a total of 76 years of bell ringing in Stedham.
Rector of St James’ Church Roger Williamson presented them with engraved glasses to mark the occasion.
But he said: “Whilst Stedham celebrated the long service given by these stalwart members of the band, their departure leaves a large hole in the team.
“The remaining four members need the support of people from other towers to be able to ring and sometimes, this is just not possible. “It would be a great shame if the newly re-hung bells of St James’ stayed silent for the lack of ringers.”
