The opening of the Hindhead Tunnel has signed the death warrant for one of the oldest family businesses in the Midhurst area, claim the owners.

Backshall’s Service Station at Easebourne celebrated its 100th anniversary earlier this year, but John Backshall, his wife Mardell and their daughter Charlotte who has run the business for the past two years, have now announced they can no longer carry on.

Miss Backshall said ‘crazy price increases’ in fuel coupled with this year’s VAT increase had hit the business hard, but the last straw had been the drop in passing traffic since the opening of the Hindhead Tunnel in July.

Miss Backshall and her father believe all the factors have combined to hit them with a 30 per cent reduction in trade.
