AN urgent meeting is being sought to find a solution after complaints from tourist coach drivers that they can no longer park in Midhurst.
One coach driver was so frustrated he wrote to town councillors saying he had recently visited the town on a scenic tour of the South Downs.
“Imagine my disappointment and frustration when I arrived in Midhurst only to find the coach park had disappeared under a car park at the Grange and no provision made for my coach.
“I temporarily parked in the bus bays at the bus station and asked the tourist information centre where I was supposed to do. I was told there is no coach parking or an official coach park in Midhurst.
“Do I take it that coaches and the revenue they provide your local businesses are no longer welcome in Midhurst?”
Town councillors have long voiced concern about the lack of coach parking after seeing plans for the new Grange Centre no longer included it.
It had been agreed tourist coaches could use the three bus bays outside the new Midhurst Rother College and now talks are also being held with the school for the use of its bus bays in school holidays and at weekends.
But town councillors were concerned this meant passengers, often elderly people having to cross a busy main road to reach the town’s facilities.
Town councillors are seeking urgent talks with Stagecoach and other key groups in a bid to use a bus station bay as a dropping off point.
