THE Stag at Balls Cross is celebrating after receiving a coveted Alastair Sawday’s pub award.
The latest edition of Sawday’s popular Special Places Pubs and Inns of England and Wales comprises over 900 of Britain’s very best pubs, with just 12 selected to receive an award in one of four categories.
The three winners of the authentic pub award demonstrated ‘a passion for being an authentic, simple and unadulterated pub’.
Alastair, founder of Sawday’s, said: “The Stag at Balls Cross is a delightful 16th-century Sussex pub loved by riders, walkers and locals.
“They come for pints of Badger and wholesome food by the inglenook in winter, the Mummers play at Christmas and summer jazz nights in the garden.
“This is a proper rural local. With over 900 pubs in the guide, winning is a terrific achievement for the hard-working landlords, landladies, chefs and staff.”
The entry in the guide reads: “The quintessential Sussex pub – some might say (and often do), the best pub in the world. Under 16th-century beams by a crackling fire – or in the garden in summer – riders, walkers and locals enjoy a natter over well-kept Badger and Sussex Bitter. Wholesome home-cooked food is another draw, the traditional pies (steak and kidney) being a severe temptation; try too the mutton and pearl barley broth.”
