Midhurst and Petworth businesses celebrate Independents’ Day

MIDHURST and Petworth businesses are celebrating Independents Day by encouraging people to buy at least one item from their local shop on Wednesday, July 4.

The national campaign is organised by Skillsmart Retail and the National Skills Academy for Retail who champion local retailers.

In Midhurst special offers will run throughout the day and a variety of businesses are taking part, including cafes, boutiques, shoe shops, outdoor wear specialists, homeware shops, florists, beauty therapists, jewellers, upholsters and even motor repairs.

Melanie Burgoyne, rural towns co-ordinator at Chichester District Council, said: “Midhurst has a vast array of independent shops that help to make the town special and distinctive.

“They want to use Independents’ Day to highlight what the town has to offer and to encourage more people to shop locally and experience the excellent service on offer.”

At Petworth shops are holding their second Independents’ Week from today (July 2) to Sunday (July 8).

“Whilst our friends in the United States are celebrating July 4, we will be holding a week-long celebratory event to mark the unique qualities of this beautiful market town,” said chairman of Petworth Business Association, which is sponsoring the event, Jackie Tudor.

“This event highlights Petworth’s significant position as a totally independent retail haven away from the hustle and bustle of the everyday High Street, bringing that increasing rarity – variety, courtesy and personal attention.”
