Controversial plans to restore Duncton chalk quarry using imported waste look set to get the thumbs down from the South Downs National Park planning committee.
In a report to members who are due to decide the application next Thursday (June 14), director of planning Tim Slaney recommends they refuse the application from quarry owners GPR Wessex Ltd.
He said by its scale and nature it was considered to amount to major development.
The application to restore the quarry using imported inert waste material includes a proposal for treatment activities to recover aggregate and soil for reuse over the next 30 years.
It is being strongly opposed by villagers surrounding the chalk quarry.
They are concerned the plan would have huge implications for the whole area north, south east and west of the quarry, bringing many more lorries in for the next three decades.
