Petworth firms step up to fill funding gap for Fete in the Park

BUSINESSES in and around Petworth have rallied to support the town’s annual Fete in the Park after a funding rebuff from the parish council.

Petworth Community Association, which organises the event in Petworth Park, sought an increased grant of £1,500 from the parish council to plug a gap in funding after the Petworth Festival switched its aid to the town’s celebrations for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Community association chairman Tony Sneller, who also serves on the parish council, said sponsorship was being sought but council help was still needed so that a free concert in the evening, which had become a popular element of the event, could be staged.

Councillors, however, took the view that the fete should be able to cover its costs without that amount of council money and voted to give only £500.
