Award-winning chef Simon Goodman is to take over the lease of a pub near Fernhurst which he helped to win the Pub of the Year accolade from the editors of the 2012 Good Food Guide.
Simon, 32, was brought up in Fernhurst and has moved barely a couple of miles to run the Duke of Cumberland pub in nearby Henley village.
The former Midhurst Grammar School pupil and Chichester College catering student joined the staff four-and-a-half years ago as head chef.
But, from April Fool’s Day – no bad omen there, he hopes – he will be the boss with a 20-year lease from pub owner Dan Lazenby.
He turned down an offer of a job from celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey to work at the Duke of Cumberland, and now he says: “I am in it for the long-term. I want to stake my career here. It’s a lovely pub.”
