MORE than 160 riders took part in the Chiddingfold Leconfield and Cowdray Hunt sponsored ride in aid of the hunt and Midhurst’s Macmillan Cancer Support.

Six jumps as soon as the course started fooled a few riders as they had not warmed up enough and several returned there at the end to take them.

With 30 optional jumps around the course there were lots of opportunities to jump the different heights and the organisers were grateful to the Chichester and District Scouts and the many others who helped build, site and later, remove them.

Other helpers were stewards around the course and yet more helped register riders and collect money.

Joan Langmead, the chief organiser, was in constant communication with people around the course and expressed her gratitude to those who turn up year after year to help as well as the Cowdray Estate and the staff there, including Donald MacDonald and Kerry Hill.

It seemed many riders had achieved greater sponsorship than in other years and it is hoped several thousand pounds will be raised.

All the riders said it was fun, including Jane Soul, from Petersfield, who was riding her 17-year-old.

Others were out on new horses or youngsters, knowing the course was well-marked and safe.
