Chingford pond restoration on planning agenda

PLANS to restore a pond near Petworth have received overwhelming support from Barlavington residents.

If the proposals are passed by South Downs National Park Authority, Chingford Pond, which lies within Burton Park to the south of Petworth, will have its historic water level restored and cascade refurbished.

Once completed, the pond will ‘improve the amenity of the site and the historic parkland for the long term’.

Jack Garwood, from Duncton, said: “The return of this charming amenity to its former glory would enhance this already delightful part of the national park for many visitors as well as local residents.”

The engineering works have been designed to be as unobtrusive as possible, and any disruption temporary.

The application, which will be decided by South Downs National Park Authority today, has been recommended
for approval.
