CHRISTMAS arrived in Fernhurst when the tree and lights around the shops were turned on by the May queen, Rose Buchanan.

Despite the cold and snow – although that was coming from a machine – many villagers turned out for the event and enjoyed mulled wine and mince pies provided by parish councillors.

After carols played by the Fernhurst Bells on their hand bells, chairman of the parish council Andrew Moncrieff introduced the evening.

The Rev Nick Haigh welcomed all with a poem and prayer and Rose turned on the lights, brightening the whole area.

The ceremony ended with community carol singing led by members of the choral society.
