Committee approves Crown Inn changes despite officer advice

A district planning committee has approved a proposal for design amendments and the demolition of a wall and chimney at the former Crown Inn at Edinburgh Square, Midhurst.

Permission for the conversion of the Grade II listed building into a house was granted last October.

Now, and against their officers’ advice, members of Chichester’s north area development control committee have allowed an application for amendments to the design approved in October, including the demolition and replacement of the north gable wall and a chimney, which were reconstructed in the 1890s, to provide off-street parking space.

Planning officers had strongly urged refusal.

In a report, they advised the committee the resulting remodelling of the building would undermine its listed status as well as its setting in the Midhurst conservation area.
