A Petworth man has warned of a scam operating in the area after he and his fiance were targeted by a bogus company.

Richard Ince said they were telephoned by a man who told them they had been successful in claiming compensation for unwanted credit card payment protection insurance (PPI).

“We had enquired about it through the bank but we were told we didn’t have a case and had left it at that. But this man said he had a cheque for £2,400 which he was going to bring round to us.

“He had my fiance’s name and our telephone number, address and even the name of her bank.

“Because he had all these details it seemed very real and plausible at first. We don’t know how he got the information.”

In another telephone call the man said he was delivering the money that day but Mr Ince and his fiance had to get a Ukash voucher for £150 to give him and he would hand over £150 cash in exchange.
