A huge police hunt across Stedham and Iping commons, near Midhurst, ended successfully last night (Wednesday, September 28) when a 51-year-old man, who had been missing for more than 24 hours, was found safe and well.
Large numbers of police officers from the Sussex force’s specialist search unit, helped by a team of search dogs and handlers, descended on the commons shortly after midday.
They combed undergrowth on the sandy heathland in search of a man, reported to be from Littlehampton, who had been missing since 5.30pm on Tuesday.
His vehicle was found yesterday at Iping Common car park. He was described as ‘vulnerable’ and is believed to have had connections with the Buddhist monastery at nearby Chithurst.
Sussex police helicopter was also called to assist in the search, which ended just before 10pm when the man was found in the area.
A police spokeswoman said he was safe and well, and had been taken back to his family.
