MORE than 30 young people from the Midhurst Rother College received their bronze Duke of Edinburgh awards from Dr Joe Vitagliano, college principal, and Jo Ireland, the Duke of Edinburgh area organiser, at Capron House in Midhurst.
To achieve the award each young person had to take part in a physical activity, complete a period of voluntary service in the community and demonstrate competence in a skill of their choice, and it meant 18 months of hard work for each of the candidates.
The tasks involved working with younger children in passing on skills and supervising activities, working with older people and animal welfare groups. Skills involving musical instruments, bell ringing ,horse management, cooking and one challenge to rebuild a vintage bicycle.
The group had to complete a two day expedition carrying all that was needed in back packs, including their tents for a weekend camp.
