A-level results: Bishop Luffa pupils excel for another year

There were smiling faces all round as Bishop Luffa students achieved above and beyond with this year's A-level results.

A third of all the exams taken by the group of 128 students gained grades A*-A with a 99 per cent pass rate.

To add to the impressive achievements, 61 per cent of all their exams achieved grades between A*-B.

Jamie Saunders, Head of Sixth Form, said, “These are very strong results from a close-knit year group who responded impressively to the challenge of A-levels.

“The vast majority will enter higher education next year to study an array of exciting courses from traditional disciplines such as medicine and law to practical and creative areas such as aerospace engineering and film production.

“Our students always aim high and they have achieved places at a number of prestigious and very competitive universities. Their future is bright.”

Florence Alexander, 18, will be studying medicine at Cambridge University in September after succeeding an outstanding set of results.

“I found out I got an A* and two A’s in biology, chemistry and maths,” she said.

“I feel good but it is all really surreal.

“It is a massive weight off my shoulders now.”

Romy Welch, 18, will be joining her at Cambridge to study modern language after achieving two A*’s and an A.

She said: “I feel really relieved, I kept thinking something was going to go wrong.

“I cried three times this morning – before I even knew if I had got in or not!”

Classmate, Lizzie Sharp, 18, was sharing in her friends success after succeeding a clean sweep of results with three A*’s in biology, chemistry and maths.

She will be joining her classmates to Cambridge to study natural science.

She said: “I was quite nervous before I got my results, I woke up really early.

“I think I’ll be spending the rest of the day with my family to celebrate – it feels like the hard work has paid off.”

The pressure was on for Tiffany Etherington, 19, after she achieved AAB last year but decided to retake her B in chemistry.

After spending another year studying hard, she has now achieved an impressive clean sweep of three A’s.

“I’m going to Surrey in September and I am over the moon,” she said.

“It felt like even more pressure this year as it was a retake, I didn’t know if I would get that A.

“I’m definitely going to celebrate tonight.”

There was more high-flying success with Sophie Shergold, 18, who will be setting on to Brighton in September to study medicine after achieving three A*’s in biology, chemistry and maths.

Bassel Wilson, 18, gained an exceptional two A* and an A in biology, chemistry and maths and will be off to St George’s in London in September to study medicine.

He said: “I was very worried this morning, the exams were really tough this year.

“It was only a conditional offer so a lot was riding on today, I checked first thing this morning and I was so happy.”

Josh Wilkingson, 18, also was over the moon with his results after discovering he had a clean sweep of A*’s after believing he was going to fail.

“I was going to go to Southampton but now I have these results I might go through adjustment and see if I can go somewhere even better.”

Josh plans to do mechanical engineering at university.

“I really hadn’t planned for much because I thought I had failed.

“It was like thinking you had won the lottery but then you realise the numbers are wrong – I really didn’t think these were my results!”

Headteacher, Nick Taunt, said: “I am very proud of all the students and everybody is happy which is what we like.

“Almost everyone got their first place at uni which is brilliant, there have been some very strong results across the board.

“It reflects very hard work from both the pupils and the staff, we are delighted.”
