But now villagers have celebrated the official opening of Garbits steps - two sets of steps cut into Habin Hill firstly to allow children from Rogate Primary School to get safely to the Woodland Trust’s Garbits Woods for their Forest School activities but also giving villagers access.

Glasses were raised as West Sussex county councillor (WSCC) Gordon McAra cut the ribbons and the first group of children walked down the steps and up into the woodland.

He then helped two pupils cut the cake designed and donated by parish councillor and owner of Rogate Stores, Ann Arnold. The project was promoted by Rogate’s former tree warden Stephen Allberry, who began discussions with the Woodland Trust, the then South Downs Joint Committee and WSCC highways department.

Parish councillor and school governor, Fiona Dix welcomed the many visitors and paid tribute to the Woodland Trust and South Downs National Park for their generous contributions. She also thanked the council’s open spaces committee members who had co-ordinated the work of all the groups involved.
