HAVING been surrogate parents to 300 baby eels Fittleworth School pupils returned them to the wild last week, supervised by the Environment Agency (EA) as they put them into the River Rother.

It was all part of the Eels in Schools project, sponsored by the Severn and Wye Smokery and the EA, to educate children and restock waterways with British eels.

Head teacher Graham Bloomfield said: “This was a great opportunity to involve the children in something a little bit different. Some greeted the squirming elvers with initial trepidation, it soon became a focal point.

“The children fed them and monitored their health.”
