International opera singer Matthew Rose has returned to his schoolboy haunts where the seeds of his musical career were sown.

Matthew, 34, visited staff and pupils at Seaford College, near Petworth, ahead of a summer spectacular he is organising, the first Lavington Park Prom, in the grounds of his old school.

He is currently appearing at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, as Colline in La Boheme.

He said it was at Seaford that his enthusiasm for music was fired by the arrival, when he was in the sixth form, of music teacher Martin Essex.

“I am particularly grateful to the wonderful and inspiring teacher who opened my eyes and encouraged me to have a career in music,” he said.
