Fernhurst games must go on despite heat

FERNHUST Football Club held their six-a-side football competition, on the hottest day of the year with thunder rumbling throughout the morning.

But the number of teams expected was sadly depleted, as four withdrew during the week and three more did not turn up on the day, leaving Trevor Ford the organiser a last minute job rearranging the leagues for the first round.

Despite the heat all the matches were played.

In league one, Petworth, Lodsworth. Fernhurst A, Petersfield and Beaumonts, from Midhurst, played six minutes each way against the others, while in the smaller league Fernhurst B, Rogate, Midhurst and Petworth B played eight minutes a half.

The semi finals had Fernhurst A playing Fernhurst B, and Beaumonts playing Petworth A. Beaumonts went on to win the final against Fernhurst by 5-1 despite not having their captain Nick Beaumont playing as he had an accident beforehand which resulted in a trip to hospital.

The winning team had helped other teams by playing for them when they were short. Beaumonts players were Bill Stevens, Kevin White, Jonah Murray, Mark Pelling; Lawrence Hyde and Tyrone Spencer.

Before presenting the trophy and medals Rob Peck thanked the referees and everyone for turning up to make the event a success.
