A FIRE caused severe damage to a church building in the Petworth area today (Sunday March 22).

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Services sent two engines and a Land Rover to the scene, near Tillington Road, at 2.15pm this afternoon.

A spokesperson said: “We responded to a report of a fire in an outbuilding of a disused chapel building in the Petworth area.

“60 per cent of the ground floor was severely damaged by fire.

“And 20 per cent of the first floor was damaged by fire.”

The damaged building was said to be used for storage.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
