THERE is no excuse for slipping out of your exercise regime after a new initiative from Midhurst Town Council.
Councillors have just installed an innovative new outdoor gym at Carron Lane.
It consists of pieces of equipment which can be used by all ages and all degrees of fitness from beginners to seasoned athletes.
Glyn Upjohn is chairman of the town council’s community care committee which spearheaded the project.
“Carron Lane has benefited from considerable investment and improvement over the last year or so,” he said.
“We have resurfaced the car park, installed new picnic benches and added some wooden climbing equipment for older children.
“We have also ordered a zip-wire that should appeal to all ages and will be arriving soon. The result is a recreational area in a beautiful setting that can be enjoyed by young and old alike.
“This outdoor gym equipment adds yet more interest and has been really well received. Whenever I have visited Carron Lane since it was installed it always seems to be in use, which is really great to see.”
The play area is now home to five new pieces of outdoor gym equipment which have been installed for the town council by Fresh-Air Fitness.
Although one town councillor was heard to describe it as ‘torture equipment’ the apparatus is billed as great fun to use and is designed to encourage outdoor exercise. The units can be used individually, in pairs or groups and labels on the side explain the different exercises.
Tim Young, chairman of the Midhurst Milers running club, said: “We think the new equipment is great and will definitely be incorporating it into some of our regular Wednesday evening runs. We often head out onto Midhurst Common that way to get to Sunset Hill, so it will break things up a bit and make it more challenging to stop off and do some circuits on the way.”
