A painting of racing legend Sir Jackie Stewart has been auctioned by Bonhams to raise funds for a Scottish charity.

The painting, which sold for £5,175, was donated by artist Jonathan Mitchell to raise awareness for Dyslexia Scotland.

Sir Jackie Stewart is the charity’s president.

“I think it was a very good price,” he said after the auction.

“The artist did this with the idea of raising money for Dyslexic Scotland.

“It will help a lot of young children and a lot of prisoners we work with.”

The racing legend also spoke of his own dyslexia, and asked the audience if they knew people who also had the condition.

Signed by the artist, the painting depicts Sir Jackie in the Matra MS80 at the 1969 German Grand Prix at Nurburgring.

History was made at this year’s auction, as the 1935 Alfa Romeo 8C-35 was sold for £5.3m, £5.9m including premium - the highest an Alfa Romeo has ever fetched.
