Police are hunting a third men after two men were arrested outside Chichester following a theft in Shoreham.

At 9.50am Sussex Police’s Automatic Numberplate Recognition (ANPR) camera near Chichester spotted a van linked to a theft earlier the same day on Thursday, June 27, and the alarm was raised.

The van was stopped on the Fishbourne Roundabout on the A27 and a man arrested in connection with the theft of a large quantity of cigarettes from outside Tesco Express in Upper Shoreham Road, Shoreham, whilst they had been in the process of being delivered.

When police pulled over the van they arrested a man on suspicion of theft; two other men ran off, and one of them was arrested nearby after a search.

Sussex Police said enquiries are continuing to trace the third man. A large quantity of cigarettes valued at £8,000, believed to be the proceeds of the theft, were found in the van.

John Borland, 52, of Barle Grove, Birmingham, and Adrian Goldsmith, 47, of Avondale Grove, Gorleston, Great Yarmouth, appeared in custody at Worthing Magistrates Court on Friday, June 28, both charged with the theft of the cigarettes. They both pleaded guilty and were both sentenced to 28 days’ imprisonment.
